It’s never dark and gloomy during winter in Japan. Cities will be lighted up and decorated with LED lighting and other energy-efficient lighting technology. These events are often called ‘Winter Illumination’ which adds some sparks to the coming event of Christmas. However, the city of Yokohama has other plans. They want to project a futuristic city to the locals and visitors by integrating green technology with arts and creativity.
In this ‘Smart Illumination Yokohama’ event, the city is collaborating with QuanZhou city in China and Gwangju city in South Korea to light up the Yokohama Waterfront areas. The closest station to the Yokohama Waterfront is Nihon-Odori station, getting out from Exit No.1.
This location is often frequented by couples, families and tourists. Morning view is nice, but I always prefer the night view with illumination. November is the best time to enjoy the outdoor illumination events as the weather is cool and refreshing. December will be colder and you will need warmer clothes or gloves to enjoy the outdoor events.
One of the programs in this event includes a Dance Truck performance where various dance artists will perform inside the truck with special lighting devices. It’s an eye-opening experience to witness how dance artists evolve together with lighting technology. The dancers are showing that dancing is not just moving their arms and legs but also how to apply the lighting and shadows to their performances.
You may think a major event like this would cost you money but this event is absolutely free. Most Winter Illumination events in Japan are free to watch and enjoy. So why not put on some warm clothes and come enjoy the outdoor illumination events in Japan?
