Caretta Illumination – Brigthen up the Tokyo Bay

Caretta Illumination

Be inspired by this musical and LED lights performance at Caretta Shiodome shopping complex. The nearest station is Shiodome station (汐留駅) which is 1-minute walk away, but you can also reach it from Shimbashi station (around 5-minute walk). This illumination event is held here every winter and is absolutely free for all visitors. The theme is never the same each year. The organizers always have fresh new ideas for their illumination event.

Last year, they used LED lights and 3D projection mapping on the building walls accompanied by an animated story relating to Christmas. This year, they created a ‘Corridor of Lights’ and ‘Pillars of Lights’ that will perform an audiovisual light show starting from 5pm. This particular show will repeat its performance every 20 minutes until the last show at 10pm.

There are 5 scenes in this show. First scene tells the end of winter, second scene tells the beginning of Spring, third scene shows the energetic and colorful lights of Summer, fourth scene shows the falling flowers and leaves of Autumn before the icy winter approaches, then the final scene illustrates the Canyon d’Azur which is the Light Valley. There is this sense of wonder as you witness each scene unfolding itself from the beginning until the end.

Another appealing point of this shopping complex is the city lights landscape view from the 46th floor. The landscape view is 200 meters above ground and you can see the Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba and Ginza districts. There is an area where you can enjoy the view for free. If you want to enjoy more of the landscape view, you can enter one of the Sky Restaurants on the 46th or 47th floor. It’s also a great place to have business dinners or special celebrations.

A theater and a museum can also be found in the building. I think it’s worth a visit if you have no other plans for this winter.
Here is some information about how to get to Caretta Shiodome in English.
